DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2021 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A woman who says she was drinking in the parking lot of a Delray Beach car dealership was stopped for DUI by Delray Beach Police after taking "sweeping movements to the left and right" on South Dixie Highway. When an officer approached the woman's car around 2:30 a.m. early Friday morning, she was apparently seen "slapping herself in the face."
Maria Slater of Jaeger Drive in Delray Beach is now charged with DUI.
This is the narrative written by the investigating Delray Beach Police officer in a report obtained by BocaNewsNow.com:
On 10/1/2021, at approximately 0230 hours, I was on general patrol on S Dixie Hwy when I observed a light-colored passenger car traveling southbound at a low rate of speed. As the vehicle approached and passed me, I could see that the driver was a white female with dark hair. I got behind the vehicle and watched it take wide sweeping movements to the left and right, leaving its lane of travel on both sides. As the vehicle approached Lindell Blvd on S Dixie Hwy, I activated my lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle slowed but did not stop. The vehicle continued to turn west onto Lindell Blvd and then north onto Albatross Rd before coming to a stop.
As I approached the driver's side of the vehicle, I observed her slapping herself in the face. I advised the driver, later identified as Maria Slater, of the reason for the stop. Slater was very apologetic but had a dazed appearance and was unable to focus. asked Slater where she was coming from, and she stated that she left work. Slater then advised that she worked at a local car dealership, where she and coworkers were drinking beer in the parking lot after hours. Slater slowly and deliberately retrieved her Florida license from the card holder on her cell phone. When
asked for the registration and insurance, Slater seemed to be confused. While Slater searched for the documents, I asked basic questions to divide her attention.
Each time Slater had to answer a question, she abandoned her search and never resumed looking for the documents. Slater was able to provide the registration, but not the insurance. While speaking with Slater, I immediately detected the odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage coming from her breath. This odor intensified as she continued to speak. Slater's speech was slow and slurred and she had difficulty focusing on the task at hand. At my request, Slater exited the vehicle and was very unstable on her feet, nearly falling over several times.
Slater's eyes were red and glossy, and she swayed in every direction while standing still. Slater was wearing a green dress and black sandals with heels. Her clothes appeared neat and clean. Slater advised that she finished work at 10:45pm and stayed in the parking lot with coworkers.
Slater stated that she had two or three IPA beers of an unknown brand. It should be noted that a mostly empty can of Goose Island IPA was found in the center console and an empty flask of Fireball Whisky was located the pocket of the driver door. Believing Slater may be impaired, I requested that she submit to the roadside Standardized Field Sobriety Tasks to dispel my suspicion. Slater agreed. During these tasks it was confirmed that Slater did not suffer from any vision or physical impairments or injuries that would have affected her performance on these tasks.
According to the report, Slater had problems completing multiple field sobriety tests conducted by Delray Beach Police. She later refused to provide a breath sample, which results in an automatic license one year license suspension under Florida law.
Slater was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and later released on her own recognizance.
